Telling Your Story in a 360-Degree Way

Karen-Marie Hyland will focus the luncheon conversation on maximizing your business resources and applying a campaign approach to effectively develop your message in a communications environment that is constantly evolving.

Karen joined BP America in 2008 as director of public affairs for the North American Gas Division. She has extensive experience as an independent media and public relations consultant with a variety of corporate clients and has trained several hundred executives all over the world in crisis communications, media interview and public speaking skills.

Before joining BP, Karen worked for more than eight years in the television news business as an assignments manager supervising news reporting and photojournalist staffs at the Fox News station WTTG in Washington, D.C, the Orange County News channel in Santa Ana, California, and Media General’s WCBD in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. She was part of Edward R. Murrow and Emmy award-winning teams for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, multiple national elections and the Washington D.C. sniper trial.

Karen also serves in the U.S. Navy Reserves as a public affairs officer, holding the rank of lieutenant commander. She is the officer in charge of the Navy Office of Information – East (reserve component) in New York City. In this duty, she supervises the writing and delivery of press releases and reports for the public and the military, trains military officers before they meet the public and the news media, and advises the operational commander on communications issues. She was mobilized to Baghdad, Iraq, where she served as the public affairs and legislative affairs officer to Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the commanding general of all US Forces in Iraq, and most recently with a Special Operations task force in Jordan, combatting the ISIS threat.

In her current role with BP, Karen is senior director of the political and civic affairs programs, which encompasses the BP Employee PAC and all grassroots and civic engagement activities for the company.
