“Blogging” is a broad term, encompassing everything from personal memoirs to online magazines and newsletters. ESIG regular Ralph Fuller set out to combine his predilections as a science writer with his passion for scuba diving and the life he finds on coral reefs by establishing a website for divers called Poseidon’s Web – Explain the Reef!

He had no idea how circuitous this journey would be, nor how far it would take him. Hint: Writing’s the easy part. He’s still navigating the mysteries of blogging software, search engine optimization and the challenges of adapting his content to attract visitors.

Join Ralph and digital media expert Rob Bartlett on May 9 for a case study into the mechanics, frustrations and accomplishments encountered in developing an active magazine blog. And, gain insights into how blogging might work for you.

Key points to be covered:

  1. The business opportunity: Educating divers who don’t understand what they are seeing when diving on a coral reef.
  2. The personal opportunity: Making money (hopefully) while focusing on a personal passion.
  3. Reasons for blogging: Diverse goals, from sounding off to making money.
  4. The platform: Web hosts, themes and software to run blogs.
  5. The content process: Writing content – the easy part!
  6. The challenge of building traffic: Attracting a consistent audience – the hard part!
  7. Traffic building tools: Search engine optimization, social media.
  8. Measurement tools: Determining what works and what doesn’t.
  9. The journey: Changing course along the way and discovering the unexpected.

Ralph and Rob planned this month’s program.
