Downs Matthews Memorial Scholarship

The IABC Houston Student Scholarship is in memory of Downs Matthews, an IABC Houston pioneer, to foster the communication profession. Undergraduate and graduate student applicants should be majoring in a field of communication. Scholarship assistance is based upon academic performance, leadership potential, and financial need.

The Downs Matthews Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award in the amount of $2,500. IABC Houston pays scholarship funds directly to the student. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

This year, the scholarship was awarded at the 2020 Virtual Bronze Quill Gala on June 11, to Houston-resident and current Syracuse student, Payton Campbell. Payton maintains a 3.7 GPA at the prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications where she is major in graphic design while pursuing a minor in Entrepreneurship. At Syracuse, she’s no stranger to the Dean’s List, she serves as the school president for the National Association of Black Journalists, she is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and a Newhouse Ambassador.

If you have any questions about the scholarship application process, please contact IABC Houston at [email protected]
